Description

This is probably a farmhouse, now divided into two cottages. It dates from 1703, although it is believed to incorporate earlier timber-framed elements, and has been altered and renovated over time. The exterior is white-painted roughcast on brick, with a slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan with later extensions to the rear of both sections. It has two low storeys and four widely-spaced windows. The ground floor windows are segmental-headed, 16-pane sash windows without horns. The first floor has horizontal sliding sash windows; those to the left have nine panes in each leaf, and those to the right have six panes in each leaf. A square datestone with a moulded surround and a recessed panel, inscribed “G. W. A. 1703”, is located between the third and fourth first-floor windows. This refers to William Arthur Grice, who leased the property in 1703. On the rear first floor of No. 86, there is a three-light casement window that retains the double-chamfered reveal of what was once a three-light mullioned window.
