Description

This is a windmill tower, dating to around 1800, and now used as a shop. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with battered walls and an embattled parapet, rising five storeys in height. The windows are generally casements with plain reveals. The south-east side has windows to the four upper floors. The west and south-west sides are similarly arranged, but with a row of six windows on the ground floor. The north side, facing the canal, features windows to the three lower floors. On the south side are two windows on the first floor and one on the second, with a doorway situated below them. The mill’s absence from William Yates’ map of Lancashire, published in 1786, distinguishes it from other mills in the area.
