Description
Hurlston Gate Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1769 at the first floor and slightly altered. It is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring a sandstone plinth and dressings, with a roof of stone-coloured tiles. The building has a square plan measuring 2 by 2 bays and stands two storeys tall with an attic. The facade is tall and almost symmetrical in a classical style, characterized by rusticated quoins and a dentilled, moulded cornice. The doorway is slightly offset to the left of centre and is flanked by rusticated pilasters, topped with an entablature that includes simplified triglyphs and a deep moulded pediment. The door itself has six fielded panels.
On each floor, there are two tall sashed windows with exposed boxes, each window containing one large and two narrow margin panes, and all are adorned with splayed stone heads featuring pseudo-voussoirs and keystones. Centrally located on the first floor is a plaque on brackets that displays a carved cartouche with a bird on top, the initials "I S" above, and the date "17 69" below. The farmhouse has gable chimneys, with each gable featuring an inserted window at ground floor and two attic windows. The rear of the building includes a round-headed stairlight with imposts and a triple keystone, along with glazing bars that create Y-tracery in the head. There are also some square two-light windows with segmental heads and altered glazing, including an upper stairlight, as well as an altered door and window at the ground floor of the first bay.
Inside, the layout consists of a four-room plan with direct entry to the front room on the left. There is a round-headed doorway leading from this room to the rear hall and staircase. The staircase is doglegged with an open string, scrolled brackets, slim turned balusters, and a ramped handrail. The doorcases and doors feature fielded panels, and there are similar doors leading to fitted cupboards. The farmhouse is noted for its unusually high quality of external and internal decoration, especially considering its modest size, and all features appear to be contemporary.
