Description
This barn, dating from around 1700, stands approximately 6 metres east of White Rails Farmhouse. Constructed primarily of handmade red brick in an English garden wall bond (a pattern of three courses of bricks with one header course), the south side facing the road has been partially rebuilt using 20th-century brick. The roof is corrugated. The barn has a rectangular five-bay layout.
The south front features a blocked waggon doorway centrally positioned, flanked by large 19th-century buttresses. The buttress on the right partially obscures the remains of a feature—possibly a former window or plaque—with a basket-arched surround. Slit-breather vents are blocked on the right side of the south wall, while the left side has been rebuilt. The north front includes a rebuilt waggon entrance in the centre, with metal sliding doors, a square window, and an altered doorway to the left. A cart doorway with a cambered timber lintel is located on the right.
The west gable wall has external steps leading to a loft doorway with a square head, flanked by small basket-arched windows. Inside, the barn has a windbraced principal-rafter roof with raked struts and two pairs of purlins. A timber-framed partition wall with wattle-and-daub infilling also exists. The barn forms a group with White Rails Farmhouse.
