Description

White Rails Farmhouse is a late 17th century or early 18th century farmhouse that has been altered. It is built of handmade red brick in English garden wall bond (3+1) on a stone plinth, topped with a composition tile roof. The house has a three-unit lobby-entry plan with a projecting porch and an added rear wing. It features two low storeys with a window arrangement of 2:1:1, and a two-storey gabled porch located at the junction of the second and third bays. The porch has a square-headed doorway with an altered door and a two-light casement window above. The other windows on both floors are horizontal-sliding sashes with 2 and 2 lights, with those on the ground floor having segmental relieving arches. A ridge chimney is positioned at the junction of the second and third bays.

To the right of the gable, there is a high screen wall, which is the back of a 19th century outbuilding that connects to the associated barn. At the rear, there is a blocked doorway near the east end and a blocked window next to it, along with a one-unit service wing that has a sliding sash window at ground floor and a casement above, with a porch in the angle.

Inside, there are some chamfered beams, and at the left end of the range, there is a dog-legged staircase dating from around 1700, featuring a closed string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The garden wall encloses a shallow front garden and is made of red brick, except for the right-hand end and its return, which are constructed of sandstone rubble brought to courses, with rounded coping. The farmhouse forms a group with the barn located approximately 6 meters to the east.
