Description
The tomb chest, dating from 1814, is located approximately 5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary in Penwortham. It commemorates John Horrocks, who died in 1804, along with other members of the Horrocks family. The inscription reads: "JOHN HORROCKS late of Penwortham Lodge in the County of Lancaster Esq. and Representative in Parliament for the Borough of Preston died on the 1st day of March Anno Domini 1804 aged 36 years" and additional details. The tomb is enclosed by a rectangular arrangement of cast iron railings, featuring urn finials at each corner. John Horrocks, along with his brother Samuel, established Horrocks, Miller & Co., which became the largest and most enduring cotton spinning and weaving firm in Preston.
