Description
The carthouse and stable, located approximately 30 metres south of Cuerdale Hall, is a building likely dating from around 1700. It features a stone plinth, a front wall made of sandstone, and brick walls on the other sides, topped with a slate roof. The structure has a long rectangular shape and is two storeys high, with an external chimney stack and steps leading to a loft at the right end.
The front wall is constructed of coursed, roughly squared red sandstone and includes larger quoins. The right half of the ground floor has a continuous opening, with a lintel made from a reused bridging beam supported by two tapered hexagonal stone columns. The first floor contains four square pitching holes and two square loft windows. On the rear wall, at the first floor level, there is a blocked three-light chamfered brick mullion window.
Inside, the building features very large bridging beams with stopped ovolo moulding, which appear to be original. The structure has been referred to as the "Retainers' Loft" in a 1954 reference by F. Coupe of Walton-le-Dale.
