Description

Rawstorne House is a former parish workhouse built in 1827, now functioning as a house. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a long, rectangular plan with a ridge stack in the center and a gable stack at the right end. It stands three storeys tall, including a raised basement.

The right half of the facade is currently blind. In the center of the left half, there is a raised entrance with a double flight of brick steps and a stone doorcase. To the left of the steps, there is one basement window. Above, there are five windows on each floor, which vary in size but all have stone sills, splayed stone heads, and top-hung casements.

There is evidence of former square window openings in the right end of the building, with five at the basement level and two on each of the first and second floors. A square stone tablet is located between the first and second floors, above the door, inscribed with the following text: "This Work House was erected in the year 1827 at the Expense of the Tax payers of the Township of Hutton. The Foundation & Area consisting of 1106 square yards. Given by Law Rawstorne Esq."

The building has also been used as a farmhouse, and the rear wall has been altered to include a barn entrance.
