Description

A row of twelve 1833 millworkers' cottages, alongside three further cottages on Aitken Street, has been restored. The cottages are constructed from coursed sandstone with a slate roof and ridge chimneys. Each cottage features a board door with a plain surround, and one top-hung casement window on each floor, designed to resemble sash windows. Number 12 has an altered doorway with a side window, number 8 has two windows at the first floor level, and number 10 features a doorway that has been altered into a window. Tie plates are visible in the middle of the row. The return wall of number 2 includes three small windows, which otherwise match the rest of the row. The row forms a group with a matching row of cottages on the opposite side of the street (numbers 1 to 21).
