Description

The Railway Viaduct, built in 1846, carries the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway over the River Irwell. The acting engineers were J.S. Perring and Sturges Meek. The structure is made of rock-faced sandstone and red brick. It features nine segmental arches, each spanning 40 feet and standing 60 feet high. The arches have punched voussoirs and red brick soffits, supported by rock-faced battered piers.
