Description

A row of eleven millworkers' cottages built in 1833, with a returned end including four cottages on Aitken Street, and later restored. The cottages are constructed of coursed sandstone, with a slate roof and ridge chimneys. Each cottage features a board door set within a plain stone surround, and a single sash window on each floor. Moulded stone gutter brackets are also present. No. 1, which incorporates a shop, has a larger ground floor window with coupled top-hung casements designed to resemble sashes. Above the door on the first floor is a datestone inscribed “IRWELL VALE”. The cottages at 1-5 Aitken Street have top-hung casements that imitate sashes. The row forms a group with a matching row of cottages located on the opposite side of the street (Nos. 2-24).
