Description
The Former United Methodist Church, built between 1855 and 1857 by Noble, is now the premises of the Rawtenstall OAP Association. The church is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and has a rectangular plan measuring 5 by 6 bays. It is situated on a sloping site that rises to the rear, with the gable end facing the road raised on an ashlar-walled terrace approximately 3 metres high. The building is two storeys tall and designed in a classical style, featuring a giant tetrastyle Corinthian portico with a plain frieze, a prominent dentilled cornice, and a pediment. The ground floor has segmental-headed openings with architraves, including two doors and three sash windows with glazing bars, while the upper floor has five similar windows. The façade is adorned with Corinthian pilasters and clasping pilasters. The six-bay side walls are pilastered and have round-headed windows on both floors, with pilastered jambs and moulded heads, also sashed with glazing bars. A later addition to the rear is not included in the listing. The church was established by the Whitehead brothers of Holly Mount following disagreements at the Longholme Methodist Chapel.
