Description

Waterbarn Baptist Chapel is a Baptist chapel dated 1847, located on Brandwood Road in Bacup. The building features a sandstone ashlar facade, with the rest constructed of coursed rubble and a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan, although the attached school at the south end is not included in this listing.

The chapel is two storeys high with a symmetrical facade designed in a simple classical style. It has pilastered corners, a first-floor sill band, a string course, a moulded cornice, and a pedimented gable. The ground floor includes two doorways with panelled doors, rectangular fanlights, and cornices on brackets, positioned between two round-headed windows. On the first floor, there is a Venetian window flanked by round-headed windows, and in the pediment of the gable, a tablet inscribed with "BAPTIST CHAPEL 1847" is protected by a cornice on brackets.

The side walls contain seven windows on each floor, with rectangular windows on the ground floor and round-headed windows on the first floor, all featuring altered glazing. Inside, there is a horseshoe-shaped gallery supported by slim iron columns with palm capitals, although it is now ceiled, and segmentally-curved box pews.
