Description
The cross located 15 metres south of the chancel of the Church of All Hallows in Great Mitton was erected in 1897 and features a 14th-century head made of sandstone. It has a square base that tapers into an octagonal shaft. The base is inscribed with a dedication commemorating the 1300th year of the reintroduction of Christianity. The circular head displays a crucifixion scene on the east side, while the west side features a second crucifixion, with Christ flanked by two figures, all under decorative trefoils and crocketed finials. Whitaker's History of Whalley notes that a large Gothic cross head was unearthed in 1801.
