Description
Higher Birks Farmhouse is a house from the mid-19th century that incorporates some remains from the 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone, with squared and coursed stone at the front and rubble at the rear, topped with a slate roof. The building has a double-pile plan and features gable stacks. It stands two storeys high with attics and has a north-west front consisting of three bays, where the windows are sashed and framed with architraves. The entrance door is adorned with a shouldered architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a triangular pediment. The gables are decorated with shaped bargeboards.
On the left gable, there is a one-light attic window that retains the remains of a chamfered surround. The rear wall features double-chamfered mullioned windows, including a five-light window on the left with one blocked light and a four-light window on the right. The first floor has two modern windows with plain stone surrounds, and between them is a tall stair window that uses the remains of double-chamfered surrounds. The entrance door, located within an open stone porch, has a chamfered surround with a triangular head.
