Description

The Church of St Paul is a church built in 1886-8 by Ewan Christian, with a later west tower added in 1936-7 by A.C.M. Lillie. It is constructed from coursed, squared rock-faced sandstone with sandstone ashlar interior details, and has a slate roof. The church comprises a west tower, a nave with a clearstorey, a lower chancel, north and south aisles, north and south porches, a north organ chamber, and a vestry. The tower features angle buttresses and an embattled parapet with corner pinnacles. Each side of the tower has two lancet bell openings, composed of two chamfered orders. The west wall of the tower contains a moulded doorway, a window of three lights with a two-centred head and cusped tracery above, and three narrow chamfered lancets below the bell openings. The aisle windows have two-centred heads with panel tracery, and the clearstorey windows have flat heads.

Inside, the five-bay nave has octagonal columns supporting pointed arches of two chamfered orders. The chancel arch is moulded and features ½ columns as responds, supported by corbels carved with leaf decoration. A tall west arch opens into the tower. The nave and aisles have an open timber roof; the nave section features arch-braced collars and king posts braced to the principals and the ridge. The east window contains stained glass, believed to be by Kempe and dating before 1899.
