Description

The Aisled Barn at Mitton Old Hall Farm, located 35 meters west of Great Mitton Hall, dates back to around 1600. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The stone walls appear to have been reconstructed. The east wall includes openings with plain reveals and a 19th-century door with a plain stone surround on the right. A wide entrance is recessed and leads directly into the nave. The north gable has three windows with plain stone surrounds and a pitching door above, also with a similar surround.

Inside, the barn contains five aisle trusses that create six bays. Each truss has a king post that rises from a tie beam and is braced to the ridge, although some braces are missing. Only the outer trusses include queen struts. The purlins are set into the backs of the principal rafters. The aisle posts are braced to the arcade plates and tie beams, with all braces being curved. The east aisle features aisle ties with principles, where the ties are mortised into the aisle posts. The western aisle is narrower, and the absence of peg or mortise holes in the aisle posts indicates that it did not originally have aisle ties; a tie added to the northern truss is a later modification. The arcade plates show short scarf joints, edge-halved with bridled butts. The soffits of the aisle ties on the east side have lap joints cut in an 'X' pattern at their outer ends. The lack of other associated mortises suggests that these ties rested on a timber wallplate of an earlier stone wall.
