Description

Bolton Peel Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with a stone slate roof. The house originally comprised three rooms, with a two-storey gabled porch. The windows are mullioned, featuring an inner hollow chamfer and an outer chamfer, all with hoods. To the left of the porch is a four-light window on each floor. To the right of the porch is a six-light window with a king mullion, accompanied by a four-light window on the first floor. Further to the right are single-light chamfered windows on each floor, culminating in a four-light window at the far right. The porch projects over the front, supported by a moulded string. A stepped three-light window is located on the first floor, with a blocked, chamfered attic window above. The inner and outer doorways have stopped mouldings and Tudor arches. The inner door is made of planks, featuring scribed mouldings, studs, and large iron hinges. The gables have copings with footstones. A main chimney stack is situated to the left of the right-hand bay, with a second chimney aligned with the porch. At the rear is a stair outshut with two chamfered single-light windows, alongside a parallel range exhibiting two 17th century hood moulds, now partly destroyed, as well as a four-light and a two-light mullioned window. Internally, the main fireplace in the central room is wide, with a chamfered segmental arch. In the room to the right is a chamfered shouldered fireplace with a triangular head, now filled in. The main ceiling joists are chamfered with stepped stops, while the common joists feature chamfers, stops, and scribed mouldings. One first-floor room was not inspected.
