Description

Two farm buildings, likely dating to the 17th century, stand to the south of Dutton Hall, connected by a wall with gatepiers. The buildings are constructed from sandstone rubble with stone slate roofs.

The western building borders the road and appears to have been built in two phases, indicated by a straight joint. The left-hand side of the east wall features two 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with hoods, and a blocked chamfered doorway with a hood between them. Tooling marks suggest these details were added or reworked in the 18th century or later. The right-hand portion of the building has a blocked door with a plain stone surround, a blocked oval chamfered opening above it, and a wide entrance with a sliding door further to the right. The gables have copings. The south gable wall contains a door and two windows with plain reveals, plus a blocked oval chamfered opening above. The north gable wall has a door with a plain stone surround and a round pitching hole with a plain stone surround above it. The east wall has a wide opening with a sliding door at its southern end.

The eastern building has a blocked doorway with a semi-circular chamfered head on its east wall; the cyma moulding of the jambs continues around the outside of the voussoirs. To its right are two chamfered oval openings with a blocked chamfered door surround between them, and two windows with plain reveals at a lower level. A chamfered round opening is positioned above the doorway, and there are holes for nesting boxes with a ledge made of stone slates beneath it. Further along the east wall is another chamfered oval opening. The gables have copings with finials. The west wall has various openings, mostly with plain stone surrounds, and a blocked doorway with a semi-circular head matching that on the east wall.

A rubble wall with triangular coping links the two buildings and encloses the garden on its south side. In the centre of the wall are two ashlar gate piers, square in section, with cyma cornices and ball finials.
