Description
Lower Dutton Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, constructed of sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with wings extending to the west and south, and it stands two storeys high. The windows are mullioned and double chamfered. In the west wing, there are three-light windows on both floors, with the ground-floor window featuring a drip course that extends over the door architrave to its right. The left gable of this wing has a chimney. The south gable wall of the south wing includes a five-light window with a hood on the ground floor and a similar four-light window on the first floor. The left-hand wall of this wing is mostly blank, except for a modern window with plain reveals on the first floor. On the east wall of the house, there is a blocked doorway, and towards the north, there is a two-light window with a hood on the ground floor and a similar three-light window on the first floor. Inside, there is a small cupboard with a 17th-century door in the rear wall of the west wing, and it is said that there is a spice cupboard in the south wing.
