Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Roman Catholic church built in 1789. It is constructed from squared coursed sandstone and features a slate roof with chamfered quoins. The windows on the west and east walls have plain stone surrounds with semi-circular heads, projecting imposts, and keystones; the east wall has five bays while the west wall has four. The north wall includes a plain stone door surround with alternating rustication, a semi-circular head, and a glazed fanlight with glazing bars. Above this is a plain stone window surround with a semi-circular head, projecting imposts, and a keystone that lights the gallery. The south end of the church has a hipped roof with a moulded eaves cornice and blocked plain stone window surrounds on each floor. To the west, there is a single-storey bay that connects the church to the presbytery. Inside, at the north end, there is a gallery with a front of stick balusters, which projects at the centre in a half oval shape. The gallery is supported by slim iron columns and is accessed by a stair with a ramped handrail and stick balusters. When viewed from the south, the church appears to be one of a pair of pavilions to Stidd Lodge.
