Description
The Former Whalley Arms is a public house built in 1781, constructed from sandstone rubble with a slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic and features three bays. The facade includes chamfered quoins, a band, and gutter brackets. The windows have plain stone surrounds and upper sashes with glazing bars. The right-hand bay has a 19th-century single-storey stone canted bay window. The central bay contains a door with an architrave and a pediment supported by console brackets. There are chimneys on the right-hand gable and to the right of the middle bay. The left-hand gable wall also has three bays, a band, and chamfered quoins. It features sashed windows with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds, with the ground floor windows having round heads and keystones. The middle ground floor window, which was previously a door, has an architrave flanked by pilasters and a segmental pediment. Under the gable, there is a re-used 17th-century three-light mullioned attic window with an ogee head. Above this window is a plaque inscribed with 'RC 1781'.
