Description
The Swan and Royal Hotel is an 18th-century building located on Castle Street. It stands three storeys tall and is finished in stucco. The hotel features rusticated quoins and a carved eaves cornice supported by carved brackets. Each storey has three 3-light windows; the windows on the first and ground floors are larger with broader centre lights, while the upper storey windows are smaller and do not have glazing bars on the ground floor. The building has a plinth and a round-headed door with panelled jambs and an archivolt, which includes imposts with nail heads and a semi-circular fanlight. The entrance has fielded double doors, and painted stone is visible beneath the tall ground floor windows. A wrought iron inn sign with a decorative bracket featuring grapes and vine leaves adds to its charm. The Swan and Royal Hotel, along with Nos 30 to 40, forms a group with local significance, including the premises occupied by Barclays Bank.
