Description
Downham Church of England School is a school building constructed in 1839. It is made of squared limestone with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The building is one storey high. On either side of the porch, there are 5-light mullioned windows that have an inner hollow chamfer, an outer chamfer, and hoods. The porch itself contains a similar 2-light window and has a moulded open pediment with mutules. Inside the pediment, there is a plaque that reads 'AD 1839'. The door, located in the left-hand return wall of the porch, has a chamfered stone surround. The eaves feature mutules, and both gables are designed as moulded open pediments with mutules. To the south, there is a lower wing that shares similar architectural details. Its front wall includes a chamfered stone door surround and a window to the right with a plain stone surround, which appears to be a recent addition. The southern gable has a 2-light mullioned window.
