Description
Lower Hall Cottages is a house, likely built in the early 19th century, with some remains from the late 16th century. It is constructed of rubble, primarily limestone, and features a stone slate roof. The building has three storeys.
To the left of the entrance door, there are mullioned windows that have an inner hollow chamfer and an outer casement moulding. The ground-floor window has five lights, while the first and second floors each have six lights. To the right of the door, there are chamfered mullioned windows typical of the 19th century, with four lights on the ground floor, three lights on the first floor, and two lights on the second floor. The door itself is framed by a chamfered stone surround. There are also traces of a blocked window to the right of the door, and a straight joint visible on the first and second floors. The house has chimneys located to the left of the door and at the right end.
The rear wall, which faces the garden of Downham Hall, is mostly blank except for a ground-floor outshut. Within this outshut, there is a deeply-moulded doorway with an ogee head in the rear wall of the house. The door is made of planks with bands of studs and features two decorative iron straps. Inside, the western room contains a late 18th-century fireplace with a tooled false keystone and a moulded stone mantel.
