Description

Bolton Hall is a house built in 1655, constructed from sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and three bays, featuring a lobby-entry plan. The windows are mullioned and double-chamfered, each with hoods; most have five lights, except for those in the second bay, which have seven lights, all adorned with diamond leading. Between the second and third bays is a two-storey porch with a catslide roof, which oversails on the first floor and includes a two-light window on the right-hand return wall. The door has a chamfered surround, but the original lintel inscribed 'LBM 1655' has been destroyed by sand blasting. The chimneys are aligned with the porch and on the left-hand gable, which is coped with kneelers. The front elevation features inappropriate strap pointing, while the rear has a blocked first-floor window that once had timber mullions.

Inside, all three ground-floor rooms have chamfered axial beams, with the right-hand room displaying exposed chamfered and stopped common joists. The middle room contains an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered and stopped bressumer and stone jamb, while a similar fireplace in the right-hand room has been partly blocked and has had part of the bressumer removed. The left-hand room features a chamfered Tudor-arched parlour fireplace. On the first floor, part of a blocked chamfered fireplace is visible in the right-hand room. The roof trusses are made from reused crucks, and in the loft, there is a stepped three-light mullioned window in the right-hand gable that now faces into the adjoining barn.
