Description
Smith Bottom is a 19th-century cruck barn with 17th-century remains, featuring crucks that date back to the 17th century or earlier. The structure is built from sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The east wall includes a wide entrance with a timber lintel. The southern gable wall has a shippon doorway with a plain stone surround from the 19th century, along with three windows that have similar surrounds. The west wall contains a blocked wide entrance with a chamfered surround. Inside, there are two large cruck trusses, each with outriders and two spurs from each blade to the wall. The trusses have a yoke halved over the blades below the apex, and there is no tie beam. The southern truss features a collar, while the northern truss only has the housings for a collar remaining. The rafters and purlins have been replaced with modern materials.
