Description

The Canal Aqueduct, numbered 13, is located approximately 300 meters south of Canal Bridge No. 14 in Preston. Built in 1797 by engineer John Rennie, this aqueduct carries the Lancaster Canal over Savick Brook. It is constructed from rusticated rock-faced sandstone. The structure features a tubular conduit that runs through the canal embankment, with a segmental-arched roof, a reciprocally-shaped floor, and short straight sides. The west portal is semi-circular in plan and has a segmental arch made of rusticated voussoirs, with steeply-sloped curved abutments topped with flat coping and a parapet on the horizontal center section. The east portal is likely similar, though it was not inspected in detail; however, a parapet visible from the west side includes the number plate (13).
