Description
Inglewhite Cross is a market cross dated 1675, though it may be older, and was restored in 1911. It is made of sandstone and features a wide hexagonal plinth with five steps and a chamfered hexagonal base, which is inscribed on the north side with "RESTORED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION 1911." The tall shaft is octagonal in the lower half and cylindrical above, topped with a moulded collar and cap that supports a weather vane featuring a figure in Carolean costume. Each side of the octagonal part of the shaft has an oval panel with raised letters: "H," "C," "I," "V," "1," "6," "7," "5." The initials "IW" are believed to represent John Warren of Poynton in Cheshire, the lord of the manor at that time, who was Mr. Justice Warren, a member of the Council of the Welsh Marches and Judge of Chester, who died in 1706. The cross is likely linked to ancient cattle and sheep fairs held during Rogation week and in October each year, and it was famously known as the "Inglewhite Bull Fair i'th'North."
