Description
A pair of small town houses dating from the mid-1840s, located on Frenchwood Street in Preston. The houses are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Number 38 retains original white tuck-pointing. The design follows a double-depth plan, with each house single-fronted and built around adjoining halls, including coupled rear extensions. Each house has two storeys over cellars, with a two-bay and two-bay facade. Architectural details include a plinth, a sill band on the first floor, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice, all carried around the right-hand return wall of Number 39.
The doorways, located centrally, feature coupled moulded architraves with dentilled cornices, and altered doors with overlights. Each house originally had one window at ground floor level and two above. The windows at Number 39 appear to be original, featuring unhorned 12-pane sashes, complete internal shutters, and square panes. The windows at Number 38 have been altered. All the windows are fitted with raised sills and wedge lintels; Number 38 also has a casement window to the cellar. The roof is hipped over the right-hand corner, with chimneys positioned at the left end and on the right-hand slope. The right-hand return wall of Number 39 has two bays with windows matching those at the front, and includes shutters. The rear elevations show altered back windows. The interiors have not been inspected. Number 39 was unoccupied at the time of survey. The houses form part of a formerly complete group of late Georgian properties built for the lower-middle class.
