Description

Raikes Farmhouse, specifically the north-west half, is a part of a farmhouse likely built in the late 17th century. It features a brick-clad cruck frame beneath a corrugated sheet roof, with boxed eaves over thatch. The building is a low, two-bay unit that forms the earlier section of a longer range, which was extended in the mid to late 19th century with an L-shaped addition at the southeast end, although this later part is not of special interest.

The exterior is single storey with a loft above the service end. The south side has a blocked former front doorway at the right end next to the 19th-century addition, and a two-light sliding sash window in this bay. The west gable includes a very small square window for the loft. On the north side, there is a doorway to the second bay, one window to the left of this doorway, and another window at the service end.

Inside, the house part in the second bay is single storey, with a ceiling at the level of the purlins and exposed rafters believed to be made of apple wood. There is a blocked horizontal rectangular window in the north wall. The partition wall to the service end contains a full cruck truss, although the details are not visible. Historically, the house is thought to have originally had three bays and included an inglenook fireplace, which has since been removed. The third bay may have been altered during the 19th-century expansion of the dwelling.
