Description
This is a terrace of four town houses, located in Preston, dating to around 1830 and subsequently altered. The terrace also incorporates No.2 Porter Place. The buildings are constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. They are arranged over three storeys, with each house typically featuring three bays, although No.2 Porter Place presents only two bays to Bushell Place, as does No.16 at the southern end. A prominent giant corner pilaster and a continuous stone frieze run along the frontage. The doorways have an Ionic doorcase incorporating engaged columns that support an entablature, with an elliptical fanlight above the door. Four mid-19th century two-storey stone canted bay windows are present; the end bays have arched heads to the front of the first-floor windows, while the central bays have balustrades above. Further details include moulded piers, cornices, a sill course, and string courses. 20th-century windows are set into the original openings between the bays. The second floor has a mix of casements and original windows, all featuring raised sills and wedge lintels. Ridge chimney stacks are present. No.2 Porter Place, the returned north end of the terrace, extends further to the rear with a three-bay wing exhibiting similar fenestration, including a matching doorcase and 12-pane sashes or sash-style windows. Raised sills and a sill bank are also incorporated. The rear wing mirrors the detailing of the main terrace.
