Description
The White Bear Inn, formerly known as Hargreaves Great House, is a stone-built house dating from around 1667, as indicated by the date on the porch, although it may be from a later period. The building features a plinth and has three gables on the main roof. The front of the inn includes an 8-light stone mullion window with a moulded and returned dripstone. To the right, there is an 18th-century doorway. Above this doorway is a similar window with a thicker centre mullion, and there is a dummy gable with a 2-light blind window, which has moulded coping and three finials.
The three-storey porch has a moulded doorway with a Tudor arch. The first floor overhangs and contains a 5-light window, where the third mullion has been removed and replaced with a sash window. The second floor features a blind 2-light window. The coping and finials on this gable match those on the other gable, although the right-hand finial is missing. To the right of the porch on the ground floor are a 4-light and a 3-light window with square stone mullions, both of which have sash windows as the second lights. Above these are two sets of twin 3-light windows, separated by a thicker mullion; the left-hand window has a wider centre light, while the right-hand window has a wider first light. Both gables also have blind 2-light windows with coping and finials.
To the right, there is a circular single-storey section with an 18th-century door and window. Attached to the porch are mounting stones, and the left-hand return features a well-proportioned chimney breast. Inside, the building has two inglenook fireplaces.
