Description

Alkincoats Lodge is a former lodge to a small country house, now functioning as a house itself. It was built around 1850 and has undergone minor alterations in the late 20th century. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with plain kneelers, and tall stone ridge stacks with moulded caps. The roof is stone slated, and the building is designed in the Tudor Revival style with an 'L' plan.

The east elevation consists of two storeys and two bays, set on a shallow plinth. There is a central doorway with a quoined surround, topped by a shallow arched head and hood mould. The door is planked and studded, with an undivided overlight above it. To the left, there is a gable featuring a two-light chamfered mullioned window with a transom on the ground floor, and a stepped three-light window on the first floor, which has a stepped hood mould. The gable apex is adorned with a ball finial. The right side has plainer single and two-light windows.

At the rear, the left gable has single and two-light mullioned windows with transoms, along with an off-centre doorway that has a flat head and a planked door. Above this, there is a tall stair window. To the right, there are stacked two-light windows beneath a gablet. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, the lodge was built to serve Alkincoats Hall, a house dating from around 1700 that was refronted around 1770 and demolished in 1958. The stepped mullioned window of the lodge is designed to imitate the attic windows of the main house. Alkincoats Lodge is a well-designed and little altered example of a mid-19th century estate lodge, crafted to complement the house it was intended to serve.
