Description
Higher Lane Head is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates back to the early 17th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of deeply-coursed gritstone and features a stone slate roof. It has a T-shaped plan with two storeys, each consisting of two cells. The exterior is characterized by large quoins and hollow-chamfered mullioned windows.
The main range includes an intact housebody window with seven lights beneath a hoodmould, alongside an altered opening to the right that leads to a 20th-century gabled porch made from 17th-century materials. Inside the porch, there is an original Tudor-arched doorway with bulbous chamfer stops. The first floor has four altered windows set in quoined openings. The crosswing on the right has both floors featuring four-light (originally five-light) mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. The gable copings are chamfered, and there are two ridge stacks over the main range, with an external stack to the left of the crosswing that has an offset, waterspout, and two diagonally-set flues.
At the rear of the crosswing, there are two ground floor windows with two lights (the mullions have been removed) and an intact three-light window above. The main range also has a rounded doorway on the left, opposite the porch. Inside, triangular-headed doorways connect all rooms except for the ground floor of the crosswing, and there is a fireplace with a similar arch that backs onto the external stack. The stop-chamfered ceiling joists in the housebody are set on corbels with a chamfered offset.
