Description

A row of three houses, originally part of a larger row of five, was built in the mid-18th century and altered in the 19th century. The front is faced with sandstone ashlar, with ashlar dressings, while the rear is of coursed rubble. The roofs are slate, and brick chimney stacks rise from the party walls. The houses are two storeys high, with cellars and attics, and ten bays wide, featuring chamfered quoins on the right, a sill band at the first floor level, and a moulded eaves cornice. Each house has a double-depth plan, with various extensions at the rear. The plan of each house is of three bays, except for No. 10, which has a fourth bay above a wide waggon entrance. The stone lintel above the waggon entrance is carved to appear as a flat arch. All openings have moulded architraves. Ground-floor windows are sash windows without glazing bars, while the first-floor windows have eight-pane sashes. Low cellar openings lie beneath each ground-floor window, some with shutters, and others blocked. The doorways have recessed panelled doors: the door to No. 10, beside the waggon entrance, consists of six panels with an overlight featuring diamond glazing bars, flanked by reeded pilasters, suggesting an early 19th-century date. The doors to Nos. 12 and 14 (located in bays three and four) are nine-panel doors with integral overlights. Each house has a low hipped attic dormer. The dormer to No. 14 is double in width, with small-paned horizontal sliding sashes. The rear of No. 14 is three storeys high.
