Description

Whitewalls Restaurant is a house, dating to 1751 with later work in 1829, and now used as a restaurant. It is built of rendered rubble with sandstone dressings and a modern tile roof. The two-storey facade is divided into two halves. The left-hand half has end stacks and rusticated quoins at the left-hand end. To the left of the front door are two sash windows with glazing bars, with heads and sills that form a continuous band. There are three similar windows on the first floor. The front door has a moulded and shouldered architrave in a style typical of the 18th century, a moulded cornice and a false keystone with the date 1751 and a carved grotesque face. The eaves are treated as a cyma cornice. The right-hand half of the facade has a French window in a plain stone surround to the left of the door and a sash window with glazing bars and a plain stone surround to the right. On the first floor are two stone surrounds with sills that are continued as a band. The moulding of the door jambs continues around a shaped lintel with a moulded cornice and an incised inscription reading ‘IH 1829’.
