Description

The Chapel of St Patrick is a ruinous chapel dating from the 8th or 9th century, located on Main Street in Heysham. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with some consolidation work completed in 1903 using stone tiles. The chapel has a rectangular plan, and the east gable wall, most of the south wall, and the eastern part of the north wall still stand to heights of between 3 meters and 4 meters. The remaining walls are mostly just foundations. The south wall features the west jambs of a window that is splayed on the inside, as well as a doorway with long-and-short jambs. The outer head stone of the doorway is adorned with three concentric grooves above a segmental arch. Excavations conducted in 1977 and 1978 uncovered evidence of an earlier chapel that was rebuilt and extended to create the structure that remains today. The chapel is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
