Description
No. 23 Market Street, which also includes No. 3 Marketgate, is a house that has been converted into a shop and dental surgery. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has three storeys and four bays, characterized by a cornice, raised quoins, and raised stone surrounds with sill bands and a lintel band on the second floor.
The ground floor features a 19th-century shop front that was altered in the 20th century, complete with a timber fascia that has a cornice and two scrolled brackets, which extends above the entrance to Marketgate in the right-hand bay. The upper windows are sashed and do not have glazing bars. There are chimneys located towards the left behind the ridge.
The ground floor of the shop continues under No. 3 Marketgate at the rear, which is used as a dental surgery and has a three-storey, nine-bay facade facing west. Above the ground floor, there is a continuous timber shop fascia, although the shop windows have now been blocked. In the second bay, there is a Tuscan pilaster doorcase with six-panel double doors. The current entrance to the dental surgery is located in the right-hand bay, with another doorway immediately to its left. The upper windows have raised plain stone surrounds and are mostly sashed without glazing bars, except for a fixed window with glazing bars in the left-hand bay on the second floor. The surrounds of the sixth bay are blocked with masonry.
