Description

No. 160 Lower High Street is a house that has been converted into shops and a dental surgery. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick, which is stuccoed at the front, and features a 20th-century tile roof with brick ridges and lateral stacks. It stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range. The central window is a sash window with six panes over a single pane, topped with a bracketed pediment. There are canted late 19th-century bays on either side, each with similar glazing.

The late 19th-century shopfront below has bays on either side that support an entablature hood with a central curved pediment. The central entrance is a recessed arched doorway with a door and overlight. Above, there is a sill band on the second floor and five unhorned sash windows, each with six panes. The central window has an ogee-headed moulded hood, a decorative finial, and gothick glazing in the upper lights. The facade features a central open pediment supported by console brackets, with a modillion cornice extending to either side. Swagged urns are positioned at each end of the facade and at the apex of the pediment.

At the rear, there is a wing that has casement windows on the ground floor and a tripartite sash window with glazing bars on each floor above. The first-floor window is a Venetian window with gothick glazing in the upper lights. There is also a lean-to extension on this wing, which has furnace-slag facing and a smaller Venetian window. Inside, the building is noted for its curving stick-baluster staircase with a mahogany handrail.
