Description
10 and 12 Market Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century and may have been re-fronted later, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble that has been rendered and lined, with ashlar dressings. It features a slate roof and a chimney on the right-hand gable. The layout is double-depth, consisting of three storeys above a cellar and four bays. The fourth bay, which has a back wall made of handmade brick, is positioned over the entrance to the yard of the New Inn on Market Street. All windows have plain surrounds, most of which have been enlarged, and feature sashes without glazing bars. The second bay on the first floor contains a pair of linked windows. The ground floor has a modern shop front. Inside, there is a dogleg staircase behind the median wall, which has a closed string and five turned balusters for every two treads. The newels are also turned, and there is a ramped handrail.
