Description

High Street Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features a facade of sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are constructed of watershot coursed sandstone. The building has a slate roof and a rectangular double-depth plan, oriented gable to the road and facing north.

The cottage is two storeys high and has two symmetrical bays, designed in a Gothick style. Notable architectural elements include a plinth, chamfered quoins, a bracketed cornice, an embattled parapet, and four-centred arched openings. The former central doorway, now altered to a window, has a deep double-chamfered surround and a hoodmould. The two windows on each floor have hollow-chamfered surrounds and are all sashed with intersecting glazing bars. The roof conceals an attic dormer behind the parapet and features gable chimneys.

The current entrance is located in the right-hand side wall facing the road, consisting of a four-centred arched doorway with a small chamfer on an otherwise plain surround and a hoodmould above. Above this doorway is a tall stair window in a matching style, featuring Y-tracery. The rear of the building includes a large later two-storey canted bay with windows that are sashed without glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
