Description
Capernwray Church is an evangelical chapel that was originally the chapel for Capernwray Hall, built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of snecked sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The church consists of a nave, a lower chancel, and a tower above the south-west porch. The nave has four bays with chamfered lancets, while the chancel has two bays with similar lancets that include hood moulds and stops. There is a moulded stone gutter on the north and south walls, adorned with three carved stone heads on each side. The north chancel wall features a chamfered doorway with a hood mould. The east window consists of three lancets with a continuous hood mould, and the west window has five lights with geometric tracery. The gables are equipped with copings, kneelers, and cross finials. The five-stage tower is supported by clasping buttresses and has lancets with hoods and floral stops on the south side at ground level and on three sides at the first floor. The west door is detailed with moulded imposts and a hood with stops. The bell openings are triple cusped lancets set within sunken panels. The roof is pyramidal and covered with slate, featuring a weather vane and gargoyles at the gutters. The interior is said to be subdivided by the addition of a first floor.
