Description
A row of five mid-19th century houses, numbered 1-9, forming St Mary’s Parade. The buildings are constructed of squared coursed sandstone with slate roofs. The first five houses (numbers 1-5) and the left-hand bay of numbers 7 and 9 form a three-storey, five-bay block. The windows are glazing bar sashes with plain stone surrounds. Paired doorways for numbers 1 and 3 are located between the first and second bays, with plain stone surrounds, cornice hoods, and six-panel doors. The doorway for number 5 is in the third bay. A sash window with a stone surround to the right of the doorway is likely a later alteration. Stone corbels support the gutter. Chimneys are located on the gables, and between bays 2 and 3, and bays 3 and 4. The right-hand part of numbers 7 and 9 is set back slightly and consists of two storeys and two bays, with windows and a doorway similar to those of the main block. A projection above the roof ridge and abutting the gable of the taller part of the building contains a staircase. Buildings shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1845 differed in shape from the current houses, suggesting they were built shortly after that date.
