Description

The Church Steps in Lancaster are a flight of 25 steps that lead up to the churchyard. They were last laid in 1884, replacing an earlier flight from 1761. Made of sandstone ashlar, the steps are wide and feature simple nosings. They are arranged in pairs, with the tread of one step being about twice as long as the one below it, making them easy to climb. On the south side, there is a retaining wall that was rebuilt around 1800 during alterations to the Castle. This wall shows traces on its inner face of rebates that were likely made to accommodate the steps from 1761.
