Description

The former vicarage for the Priory Church of St Mary, now an office, was built in 1848 and altered in the 20th century. It is designed in an Elizabethan vernacular style, constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features steeply-pitched slate roofs with coped gables and kneelers. The building has a double-depth plan with two parallel ridges and two cross-wings at the front, with the entrance situated between them. To the right of the entrance is a narrow one-bay extension that has a slightly more projecting cross-wing. Prominent chimney stacks are located on the outer walls of all the cross-wings.

The structure is two storeys high, plus cellars and attics, with a string course above the ground floor and five unequal bays. The gabled porch includes cross-windows on the sides and a Tudor-arched doorway, which is topped by a shield displaying the coat of arms of the Borough of Lancaster. Above the porch is a bas-relief featuring a branch and a scroll that bears the name of the builder, Joseph Turner, Vicar.

On the first floor, there is a central 4-light mullioned and transomed window under a relieving arch. This window is mirrored in a taller version on the right-hand cross-wing, which projects slightly on both floors. The left-hand cross-wing features a 5-light mullioned and transomed window in a canted bay on both the ground and first floors. The attics are illuminated by 2-light windows in the cross-wings and a 2-light gabled dormer above the entrance. The far-right cross-wing has mullioned and transomed windows with four lights on the ground floor and three lights on the first floor, both set under relieving arches. The garden front showcases a projecting central gabled wing with a two-storey mullioned and transomed canted bay window.
