Description

The garden house behind No. 2 Greycourt is a summerhouse built in the late 18th century and restored around 1987. It is constructed of squared sandstone rubble with an ashlar upper storey and features a slate roof. The building has an octagonal plan and consists of two storeys above a cellar. It is positioned against a garden wall, with a doorway located on the south-east side.

On the ground floor, there are windows on three sides to the right of the doorway, featuring glazing bar sashes that appear to be 20th-century reproductions of the originals. The first-floor windows are similar and include a sill band. The southern side, to the left of the doorway, has a blind recess. The structure is topped with a stone gutter cornice and a central octagonal ashlar chimney cap.

Inside, the garden house contains a cantilevered stone stair with iron stick balusters and a mahogany handrail. A second flight of stone steps leads down to a barrel-vaulted cellar. On the first floor, there is a cast-iron fireplace surround with a hob grate and boiler.

Historically, the garden house is not depicted on Stephen Mackereth's map of 1778, but it does appear in J Walker's engraving of Lancaster Old Bridge from 1797. In 1807, Clark noted that a fragment of the adjoining Wery Wall supported the north wall of the summerhouse, which was located next to the Vicarage Field.
