Description
There are two posts located at the north-east end, to the south of the Church Steps in Lancaster. These posts date from around 1800 and are made of dressed sandstone. Each post stands about 1 meter high and has an octofoil shape with a slight taper. They feature a wider, flat cap of the same shape, which is topped with a cast-iron ball. Historically, these posts were placed to mark the boundary of Castle Parade, which was developed on the site of the ditch surrounding the northern and western sides of the Castle. This development was part of improvements made to the prison and law courts, and they are associated with four similar posts at the south-west end of Castle Parade.
