Description
A late 18th-century house, built after 1778, and altered in the 20th century, is located on Castle Hill, Lancaster. The house is of double-depth plan and now functions as flats. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the rear is of coursed rubble. The roof is stone slate, with gable chimneys. The building has three storeys over a cellar, and originally two bays. A distinctive first-floor sill band runs along the front, and a plain frieze sits beneath a hollow-moulded eaves cornice, continuing the line of the upper window lintels. The right-hand side of the ground floor incorporates the remains of a former waggon entrance, featuring a large stone lintel, now accommodating two narrow, coupled doorways with plain surrounds. One doorway gives access to the house, whilst the other leads to a through-passage to a former back yard. A 16-pane sash window is situated to the left. The first and second floors feature two taller and two shorter 12-pane sash windows respectively, all with raised surrounding details. The sashes are 20th-century replacements, but are in keeping with the original design.
