Description

House, dating from the late 18th century, located on Castle Hill, Lancaster. It has been altered and partly rebuilt around 1975, and may have originally formed one half of a pair of buildings. The front facade is constructed of sandstone ashlar in narrow courses with plain quoins, while the rear and sides are of rebuilt coursed rubble, rendered on the left. The roof is covered with composition tiles, featuring a gable chimney to the right.

The building has three storeys above a tall basement, which is expressed as a plinth with deep-coursed stonework. It has three bays and an eaves cornice. The windows are 12-pane sash windows, with some recent replacements. These have raised surrounds, a sill band on the ground floor, and lintels linked into a band below the cornice on the second floor. The doorway is located on the far left and is accessed by a flight of six nosed steps with iron railings on both sides. The original door features nine raised and fielded panels, with the top panels now glazed. To the right of the doorway is the original entrance to the basement and a shop, now accessed by steps, but originally via a trap door. The rear of the building includes a recent ground-floor extension and a large staircase window.
